The Rabblecast

(Original recording date: 12/5/2017)

At the time that we recorded this episode, there were talks of Disney and Fox Studios negotiating a buyout. Which led to a bunch of speculation as to what they could mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel would regain the film rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties as well as a bunch of other intellectual properties owned by Fox(Simpsons, Futurama, X-Files, etc.)

The debate that popped up in a lot of different places was the fate of R rated movies(Logan and Deadpool), and if Disney would allow them to continue under their banner. We get into this and much more as we discuss the topic on this episode.

We also have a new entry into the "Horrible Events in History" file as Doug tells about the Halifax Explosion from 1917.

Marvel's The Punisher is back with a new series on Netflix. Jon Bernthal brings us the latest iteration of the popular anti-hero. Netflix and Marvel have had a successful relationship thus far when it comes to the various "street level" characters(let's skip over Iron Fist for now). Can they continue the trend?

We delve into the series itself, some of the history of the comic book character, and the previous films. Welcome back, Frank.

On this episode, we get back into the world of Professional Wrestling as Hernandez and Doug share a few different stories about their personal experiences. Going to a few different shows, working with certain talent, even getting turned down by some talent for interviews. We don't always get a chance to talk about wrestling, but when we do we can go on for hours.

And then, we journey back to Pennsylvania for another entry into our "Horrible Events in History" file. Doug presents to us, The Lattimer massacre from 1897.

Every now and then there comes a time when a new Marvel movie is released and both Doug and Hernandez watch it during opening weekend. The guys checked out Thor: Ragnarok and give their reactions to the third installment in the Thor film series(and the 17th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe). WARNING! If you have not seen the movie yet, there are SPOILERS in this episode regarding the plot of Thor: Ragnarok.

Among other topics discussed on this episode, the guys also get into the daily routine of one of the most infamous journalists to have ever lived, Hunter S. Thompson. His brand of "Gonzo Journalism" had a way of capturing the reader's imagination. But what did it take to fuel that kind of writing and lifestyle?

All of this and much more!

Happy Halloween!

On this episode, the guys share some of their personal stories involving surgeries, medical procedures, and blood donations. Ever have your gall bladder removed? How about laser eye surgery? And let's not forget about the vasectomy.

We get into the spooky spirit and talk horror movies. Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre... the list goes on and on. Hernandez has already admitted to being terrified of horror movies as a child. Doug walks us through some of his favorites from the franchises. He also shares some of his personal favorites that you may or may not have heard of.

Tom Petty(aged 66), was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. Petty served as the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He was also a member and co-founder of the late 1980s super group the Traveling Wilburys, and his early band Mudcrutch.Whether or not you are a fan of Tom Petty's music, there is not denying the amazing career he leaves behind.

On this episode we also touch upon the tragic events in Las Vegas. As mentioned in our intro, this episode was recorded just a couple of days after the event occurred. As such, we did not have all of the details as to what transpired. We try our best to talk about it without going into conspiracy theories, politicizing things, or standing on a soapbox. It's a horrible thing that happened. Our hearts go out to those affected by it and hopefully some answered are found in all of the chaos.

Bernie Casey(aged 78), was an American actor, poet, and professional football player. For us here at the show we will always fondly remember Mr. Casey for his roles in Revenge of the Nerds(1984) as U.N. Jefferson and I'm Gonna Git You Sucka(1988) as John Slade.

Jake LaMotta(aged 95), was an American professional boxer, former World Middleweight Champion, and stand-up comedian. Nicknamed "The Raging Bull", LaMotta was a rough fighter who was not a particularly big puncher, but he would subject his opponents to vicious beatings in the ring. With use of constant stalking, brawling and inside fighting, he developed the reputation for being a 'bully', he was what is often referred to today as a swarmer and a slugger.

Horrible Events in History is back! Doug does his deep dive into the subject material and presents us with the Villisca Axe Murders.
